New2You: Drawing Canvas With 11 Brushes And Color Picker

More brushes, more colors, more fun!

Well as I mentioned on a previous post, a new page for drawing on this site has been created. I've been working hard to get the kinks out so that this new canvas feature, an original creation of Mr. Doob, can be publicly used and enjoyed by all that come to this site.

This new canvas page comes loaded with 11 different brushes and your pick of both foreground and background colors. Not to mention the ability to clear the canvas so you can start with a clean page to draw on, and also the added bonus of being able to save your favorite drawings and masterpiece works of art.

How to use:

There are a few things you should know for using this page, at least until I finish up some things.

You can find the Canvas page by hovering over Tools in the top right navigation.

  • Click and drag mouse to draw
  • Keep browser window scrolled to very top of page when drawing
  • The tools are at the top of page below the navigation
  • When changing background color click Save to view how it looks (I need to fix the page so it shows the actual bg color).
  • Tools include:
    • Foreground color (left)
    • Background color (right)
    • 11 brushes in dropdown menu
    • Clear button
    • Save button
    • About/Help button

Built In Shortcut Keys

Depending on your browser settings, and particular browser which you're using, these keystrokes and shortcut keys may or may not work for you.

  • Brush: D
  • Size: F
  • Reset: R
  • Shift: color wheel
  • Alt: color picker

Here's a quick drawing I made with a couple of the brushes and colors. Nothing to call home about I know, but just to give you an idea.

Go try it out for yourself!

In the future

Once I get everything all working like it should with this page I will be adding a way for you to submit your drawings just like you are able to save them now. Submitted drawings will be added to a user art gallery which I plan to create. And eventually, the plan is to have best drawing contests using the canvas drawing page. There will of course be prizes, but that's a little ways down the road. I still need to fix this page up some more.

If you find any bugs or other annoyances of any kind, please let me know and I will fix them.

  1. Cool feature :) Looks a little pointless for me though.

  2. I plan to make a feature that you can submit drawings to a user gallery, and maybe eventually have contests for best drawings or something. I have alot of work to do on that still though.
