Netflix’s new limited series “Below” is streaming on the platform, featuring Josh Hartnett as a fisherman facing a dark past. The six-episode show, set on a remote island, centers on Calvin Penney and his struggle against a mysterious underwater threat that targets his family. Hartnett stars alongside Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton.

This week saw the release of the six-episode limited series “Below,” which follows the former star of cult classics like the alien-invasion movie “The Faculty” and the bone-chilling vampire movie “30 Days of Night” as he goes full Quint from “Jaws.” Hartnett plays a fisherman with a dark past that comes back to haunt him as mysterious attacks and boating accidents send his island town into chaos. All answers point to a monstrous presence beneath the waves that Calvin Penney (Hartnett) faced as a child, and he’s determined to make sure the creature doesn’t take his own kids after all these years.

Reviewers praise the monster thriller

On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an 81% rating. Reviews frequently draw comparisons to Stephen King adaptations and the Netflix hit “Widow’s Bay.” Critics appreciate the show for leaning into these established conventions rather than trying to reinvent them. The Guardian further noted the series is “replete with exploding viscera and goofy nods to such era-defining horrors as ‘The Thing,’ ‘The Fog’ and ‘Stranger Things.'” RogerEbert specifically praised the series as “pressing as it is entertaining,” while The Daily Telegraph added that the show “more than rises to the occasion” when functioning as a “monster caper.”

The connection to “Widow’s Bay”

The show’s release comes shortly after the success of “Widow’s Bay,” which won 14 Emmys. This timing has naturally led to comparisons between the two series. Both feature determined heroes and sons caught in supernatural events. Despite the similarities, the creators insist the stories are distinct.
