Android users may want to review their device settings, as Google is now automatically linking phone numbers to Google accounts signed in on their devices. The company confirmed this behavior in support documentation, stating that Google Play Services verifies phone numbers and associates them with all active accounts without explicit user consent.
Automatic Verification Process
The feature, spotted by a user on the r/Android subreddit, triggers an email from [email protected] once verification completes. Google Play Services reportedly collects SIM card identifiers and device metadata during the process, according to the initial report. This automatic action applies to both existing and future accounts signed into the device.
According to Google’s support documentation, phone numbers are shared for safety and security purposes, such as enabling Rich Communications Services (RCS) for messaging and video calls. The company states the verification occurs without prompting, though users can check the setting under Google services preferences to understand the current configuration.
User Concerns and Privacy Implications
Reddit users expressed frustration with the lack of transparency, debating why such data sharing requires no permission. Some questioned whether search histories or other activities might be linked to their phone numbers. The complaint reflects broader concerns about data privacy, particularly for users seeking control over personal information and digital footprints.
Users of GrapheneOS, a privacy-focused operating system, may also encounter this issue if Google Play Services are installed. There have been reports of difficulties disabling the feature entirely, with some users unable to remove synced data from all accounts. These challenges highlight the complexity of managing data across multiple accounts.
Disabling the Feature
To opt out, users can access Google settings, select Phone number verification, and turn off automatic verification. However, removing a phone number from additional accounts requires manual deletion through each account’s personal info page under Contact info. This involves selecting Phone and deleting the number individually for every signed-in account to ensure complete removal.
The process may not fully reverse data already synced, leaving some users concerned about residual information that remains on Google’s servers. While the feature aims to improve security and communication, its default activation has sparked scrutiny over user consent and data control. Users seeking to minimize data exposure must carefully handle these settings to protect their privacy.
